Beach Glass wins Meadowlands Pace

Saturday, July 16, 2022

Fourteen years after Somebeachsomewhere’s valiant defeat to Art Official in the 2008 Meadowlands Pace, Beach Glass earned redemption for his late sire’s connections with a powerful 1:47.2 win in the 2022 renewal of the event for 3-year-old pacers, held Saturday (July 16) at the Meadowlands.

Beach Glass left widest in a five-horse stampede to the first turn, and driver Yannick Gingras settled him second-over in pursuit of early leader Market Based through a :26.1 first quarter. Night Hawk ranged to the lead up the backstretch, and as soon as he cleared Market Based, Beach Glass surged forward to take control at the end of a :53.2 half.

On the far turn, I Did It Myway emerged from mid-division to head the outer flow and worked to within a head of Beach Glass with five-sixteenths to go. But despite having to exert himself early, Beach Glass remained resolute, edging away in the homestretch while driven out and evading a three-wide charge from runner-up Mad Max Hanover by 1-3/4 lengths. I Did It Myway held third after leveling off; Night Hawk faded to fourth after coming up empty from an earned pocket.

The winning partnership — the Schooner II Stable of Bible Hill, N.S. — consists of winning trainer Brent MacGrath along with James Bagnell, Rhonda MacGrath, Mary Louise Pye and Stuart Rath, three of whom were among the original Schooner Stables, who campaigned Somebeachsomewhere.

Beach Glass, who paid $2.60 to win, has now won six of 10 races, and the winner’s share of the $600,000 purse increased his lifetime earnings to $549,645.
